दुःखेष्वनुद्विग्नमनाः सुखेषु विगतस्पृहः । वीतरागभयक्रोधः स्थितधीर्मुनिरुच्यते ॥

duḥkheṣv anudvignamanāḥ sukheṣu vigataspṛhaḥ vītarāgabhayakrodhaḥ sthitadhīr munir ucyate

Translation

He whose mind is free from anxiety amid pains, indifferent amid pleasures, loosed from passion, fear and anger, is called a sage of stable mind.

Explanation

Answering Arjuna’s question from verse 54, Krishna opens the portrait with its classic threefold formula: undisturbed by pain, uncraving in pleasure, free of passion, fear, and anger. Together with verse 55’s abandonment of desire, this sets the emotional baseline the rest of the portrait builds on.
